Party cancelled and lawsuits threatened after The Block Glasshouse disaster finale

the block glasshouse

It was a very disappointing end-of-season auction night for many of the teams on The Block Glasshouse, with couples calling the finale an “anti-climax” that left them “pissed off”. The health of the reality TV show property market was put into question when the resulting prices netted for each apartment became the most uneven in Block history. The ‘fizzer’ auction was reportedly considered such a downer that the show’s planned lavish after-party was cancelled, the contestants opting for a “quiet beer” together instead. Brothers Shannon and Simon ended up the victors, with their apartment sold via Jellis Craig nabbing a winning bid of $1.9million – a huge $335,000 above their reserve price. First place means they also received the $100,000 prize money on top of their profit. This is … Continue reading

The Block 2014 – location for new series announced

New Block location

the location for the next series of The Block – expected to air later in the year – has already been revealed, despite initial local objections. Channel 9 have asked The Block’s production company Watercress to spend $8.25million on a converted 1980s office building in Prahran, which has six split-level apartments above two restaurants. The purchase of the office block opposite Swinburne University had some resistance from locals, as the production company were seeking to waive the council’s retail car parking requirements, but there were no VCAT appeals lodged by any of the objectors, so the permit has been granted. The application includes the conversion of the 121-127 High Street building into six three-bedroom apartments, which suggests that the next series will see six competing … Continue reading

Is there really better value in renovated properties?

By Josh Masters  It’s been great to see the spectacular results that have come from the most recent screening of the The Block, with all contestants pocketing between $200K and $400k in winnings. While The Block has had some fails in the past the producers have no doubt identified the need to buy well and leave plenty of upside in the sale – a strategy often overlooked by many first time renovators. I often come across investment properties where the owner has recently completed a renovation on an apartment only to find that they barely get the renovation costs back on the property once they sell. Ironically, they’re often better leaving the property in its original state and selling it on with ‘potential upside’ if they’re … Continue reading

Block betting: Alisa & Lysandra top of the odds to win Sky High

Alisa and Lysandra

According to official betting odds recently revealed by Sportsbet, renovating twins Alisa & Lysandra are currently tipped to win The Block Sky High with odds of 1.65 – the clear favourite ahead of the 3.00 odds given to Queensland’s Trixie & Johnno. The South Australian team – who were given the first level of the 142 Park Street building to renovate for the show – have certainly proven that they are formidable competition when their kitchen renovation received a rare perfect score from the judges. This shows a remarkable improvement from the two Adelaide police offers, as they came bottom of the pile in the very first challenge of the series. Their property is being sold through Anton Wongtrakun of Dingle Partners and, like the … Continue reading

Who’s Going to Win The Block Sky High?

It’s only a day until The Block holds its big auction day on July 27, and home renovation addicts across Australia are waiting on tenterhooks for the results. Last year’s winners Brad and Lara watched their property fly $506,000 above the reserve price. Though we all have our favourites among this year’s South Melbourne contestants, it remains to be seen which pair will walk away with the grand prize. Street News had the opportunity to chat with the five real estate agents representing the contestants. We asked them what they think each property will sell for, how their marketing campaign will set them apart from the competition, and why they think their contestants will win.
